Chelsea 2 – 1 Aston Villa: Luna 7′ OG, Benteke 45’+3′, Ivanovic 73′
Chelsea were looking dangerous in attack right from the start and forced an own goal from Antonio Luna with Eden Hazard’s shot being blocked into Luna’s path in the seventh minute. Chelsea continued to be dominant, but Aston Villa held them off in defense and began to push forward and probe. In the third minute of stoppage time for the first half Christian Benteke received the ball in the box and quickly took a shot that went in off the post to level the score. Going in 1-1 at the half meant that Aston Villa had plenty to play for in the second half.
Aston Villa began the first half where they left off by attacking Chelsea and getting some close chances. There should have been a red card on Branislav Ivanovic when he clearly elbowed Christian Benteke. Chelsea eventually got their second goal after Romelu Lukaku was fouled on the wing. The resulting free kick was headed in by Branislav Ivanovic, who should not have been on the pitch. This lead to Aston Villa pushing up more which in turn, lead to Chelsea finding more space to counterattack and put pressure on Villa. Aston Villa really should have had a penalty in stoppage time on a John Terry handball, but nothing was given and Chelsea were able to hang on for the win.
