The Black Cats come into Wednesday’s match having lost just once in their last 12 matches in all competitions. They are also unbeaten in their last six matches in all competitions. This includes their dramatic penalty shootout win over Manchester United in the Capital One Cup. Their last loss was 0-1 at home to Aston Villa on New Year’s Day.
Stoke’s problem this season has been inconsistency. I feel like I’m saying this every week when writing about them, but they have yet to put together any real decent run. In their last eight matches in all competitions they have just two wins and one draw. That one win came in their Third Round FA Cup 2-1 over Leicester.
In these same last eight matches they have failed to score in three matches and have given up three or more goals in three matches. In away matches they have conceded an average of 2.2 goals per game while scoring just 0.7 per game. Their away record in the Premier League has seen them win just once and draw twice.
My pick is for a Sunderland win. They have been playing quite well lately and showing signs of pulling themselves out of the bottom of the table. Stoke hasn’t been playing badly lately, but the buildup of recent results certainly favors Sunderland at this time.
Betting Odds (Ladbrokes):
Sunderland win: 2.15; Draw: 3.25; Stoke win: 3.40
Form: Sunderland (D, W, D, L, W, D) Stoke (W, L, L, D, L, L)
Prediction: Sunderland 2 – 0 Stoke City
