Forget Sergio Aguero and his inflated price tag, every fantasy Premier League manager should be adding Jaime Vardy. At the moment, nine matches into the season, Vardy has racked up the second most fantasy points in the official game with 65 (one behind Dimitri Payet and one more than Riyad Mahrez). He has also averaged one goal per game for a league high nine goals in his 802 minutes played.
There are plenty of questions surrounding Vardy, especially whether this is sustainable or not. This is the same question to be asked of Leicester City as a whole. Every season there is a team like Leicester that punches above its weight for a few months at the start of the season before dropping down the table.
Sure, Leicester City will eventually drop off, but in the meantime they have the top striker in the league and a supporting cast of attacking players to provide for him. In addition they have a rather favorable set of matches coming up. Their upcoming run of fixtures includes:
Crystal Palace (Home)
West Brom (Away)
Newcastle United (Away)
Following this they have several difficult matches, but they are a team that can surprise even the top teams and they are a scoring threat even as underdogs (they did score two against Arsenal in the 5-2 home defeat).
Let’s take a look at some of the stats to see why FPL teams should add Jaime Vardy.
A good indicator of gaining fantasy points comes from shots, where the shots are taken, and whether they are on goal or not.
This season Vardy has the fourth highest shots per game ratio at 4.2 which is followed by a 1.9 per game shots on target ratio. This is the top rating for a player with more than one game and is the best among all attacking players. This includes the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Sergio Aguero.
He is also a player that thrives on being in the right place. The majority of his shots are of the high percentage kind with 3.3 per game coming inside the penalty area, second most behind Graziano Pelle.
While Vardy may only have one assist this season, he is still contributing for his teammates with a total of 15 chances created. He has also provided support defensively with six interceptions, 12 tackles, and 31 aerial duels won.
Jaime Vardy has become a quality all-around player that every FPL manager should be looking to add to their team. As a point of reference, last season’s golden boot winner, Sergio Aguero, scored 26 goals with an average of 4.5 shots per game and 1.9 shots on target per game, both of which are ratios very close to Vardy’s current rate.
While it’s true that he could drop off in performance as the year progresses or even be transferred elsewhere and struggle for minutes or goals, at the moment he is the in-form striker that is a must add. His current price tag on the official game is at £7.0, a full £1.0 more than his starting value at £6.0 and he has been steadily rising since his first £0.1 price rise back in gameweek 5. Now is the time to drop the injured Aguero and add Vardy, thus created plenty of £’s to stack your midfield where all the points are this season.
